WW II - USMC Regiment

These are photos of the first installment of what I hope will be a full USMC Regiment and attachments. So far, I've painted the first battalion and part of the second, with some attached units like the light tank, the scouts and the 75mm pack howitzer. As usual, click on the small pics to go to larger versions.

The units are based for Command Decision (my rules of choice for WWII) and organized according to CD's Armies of the Second World War. Figures are by Old Glory and Quality Cast (some of them slightly modified). For those of you who aren't familiar with the game, stands represent platoons (roughly), vehicle models represent 4-5 actual vehicles.

First, here's the whole of the first battalion:

Next, some close ups of A Company (B and C companies look pretty much the same). The company consists of three rifle platoons (stands) a weapons platoon (stand) representing the company's light machineguns and 60mm mortars, and a command stand (a single figure):

Company D was the heavy weapons company of the battalion, containing machineguns, mortars, and antitank guns. Sometimes this company operated on it's own, but more often it was split up among the other companies to beef them up a bit.

The headquarters company doesn't contain much in the way of figures — Command Decision abstracts out a lot of the non-combatant elements. Logistics can be important on the tabletop, however, so there's a supply truck and supporting supply personnel present, in addition to the battalion command elements. I had no suitable figures for the support stand, so I had to do some simple conversions of a couple of existing figures. I'll need to do a total of eight or so for the regiment plus whatever shore party figures I do.

I've also painted up a few of the elements most commonly attached from higher echelons to form a battalion landing team (BLT). These include recon, tank and artillery support, a JASCO (Joint Assault Signal Company) detachment, a shore party, and engineers -- maybe some seabees (I haven't bought the figures for all of these yet).

The rest of the regiment will consist of two more battalions exactly like the first, the regimental headquarters, and the regimental weapons company, plus attachments from higher echelons.

After that, of course, I'll need some opposition. I've started on the Japanese also.
